Attorney General of India List, Salary, Tenure, Functions

The Attorney General of India is the chief legal advisor to the Government of India and is its chief advocate in the courts. They are appointed by the President of India at the instance of the Union Cabinet under Article 76(1) of the Constitution and hold office during the pleasure of the President. They must be a person qualified to be appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court. Hence, they must have been a judge of a high court for five years or an advocate of a high court for ten years, or an eminent jurist in the opinion of the President.

The current Attorney General of India is R. Venkataramani. He was appointed on October 1, 2022. His predecessor was K. K. Venugopal.

The Attorney General’s salary is Rs. 2,50,000 per month. He is also entitled to a number of other benefits, including a furnished residence, a car, and a security detail.

The Attorney General’s tenure is not fixed. He can hold office for a maximum of six years, but can be reappointed for a further term. The Attorney General can also resign at any time.

The Attorney General’s functions include:

  • Advising the Government on legal matters
  • Representing the Government in the courts
  • Conducting litigation on behalf of the Government
  • Issuing legal opinions
  • Approving prosecutions
  • Appointing public prosecutors
  • Overseeing the work of the Central Legal Services Authority

The Attorney General plays a vital role in the Indian legal system. He is the Government’s chief legal advisor and its chief advocate in the courts. He is responsible for ensuring that the Government complies with the law and that its interests are protected in the courts. The Attorney General is an independent officer who is not subject to the control of the Government. He is free to give his independent advice and to represent the Government in the courts in accordance with his own professional judgment.
